Uplighting is the most dramatic and intense of outdoor garden lighting techniques. Its primary use is to intensify interest in garden focal points.
Focal points can be organic or inorganic by nature. Sometimes a small tree is used as a focal point in the center of a contemporary garden. This is commonly done to add scale. While the tree itself is a small-growth species that is physically limited in size by its very nature, uplighting its form will magnify its apparent size and add dimension to the entire garden.
Other focal points in gardens and garden courtyards include lighted fountains and statues. Again, uplighting these figures will grab the attention and direct it to the form. It will also better blend the manmade with the natural elements of garden design.
