When was the inception of land/earth art?
You could argue that it is the oldest form of art in the world. The stone circles in Europe, the serpent mounds of the Mississippi basin, and the Nazca lines in Peru are examples of early earthworks made by ancient people. The first modern works to go by this name emerged in the 1960s out of a rebellion against the commercialism and artificiality of modern art, and out of a desire to take artwork out of the museum and back to nature.
