One reason may be that you have a very narrow yard that affords only limited space for entertainment. Adding a deck with several levels will give you the ability to convert vertical space around your home into usable space. This works especially well, too, when you have a multi-story home. The upper part of the deck will connect a second or even third floor, to an outside surface. Stairs can then lead down to a ground level deck connecting to the yard.
You may also want a multi-level deck added to a single story home in a yard with a steep grade. One way to manage a noticeable drop in the yard as it moves away from your house is to build a stable platform over this grade. The design can be rendered highly aesthetic to mask the fact that the land is actually sloped at a noticeable angle. Garden designs, hill landscaping, and retaining walls can also be used to transform uneven terrain into several different, and very exciting, zones of interest.
